Aihole

Aihole  is a historical town situated on the banks of Malaprabha River in Bagalkot district  of Karnataka. Earlier, this historical town was also called as  Aryapura  Aihole was once capital of the early Chalukyan dynasty  Aihole is rewarded as the cradle of Hindu rock architecture  There are about 125 temples divided into 22 groups spread all over the villages and nearby fields. Most of these temples at Aihole were built between the 6th and 8th centuries.

Badami

Badami, one of the many historic towns in Karnataka is located at the northern part of the State. It comes under Bagalkot District. Badami was formerly known as Vatapi and was the capital city of the Badami Chalukyas which ruled from 540 to 757 AD. Badami is located between two huge Rocky Mountains. It is surrounded by the Agasthya lake. It is approximately 500 kilometers from Bangalore. The closest town to Badami is Aihole, another ancient town just 46 kilometers away. The next two towns are Hubli 132 km and Bijapur 128 km.

Belur and Halebid

Halebid also know as Dwarasamudra in ancient times is in Hassan district. Halebid is approx 27 kms away from Hassan and was the capital of Hoysala Empire. It flourished as the capital of the Hoysala Dynasty for about 150 years.

Halebidu  literally means ‘the old city’. Beedu also stands for layout or a place of human habitat. The Hoysalas ruled this city for about 150 years. Then it was sacked by the armies of Malik Kafur in the early 14th century, after which it fell into a state of disrepair and ignore.

Belur is about 223 kms from Bangalore, a drive of about 4 hours. It is located on the banks of river Yagachi. According to inscriptions discovered here, Belur was also referred to as ‘Velapuri’. Belur is known as Dakshina Varanasi or South Banaras for its temples. Though Belur and Halebidu and just 16 kms away, they are always referred to as Belur and Halebidu as if they are one. But indeed they are one in their grandeur of erstwhile era. The temples of Belur and Halebid are best known for their south Indian architecture

Hampi

Hampi or “The City of Ruins” is an ancient village situated approximately 353 km away from Bangalore, the capital city of Karnataka State. It is also called Hampe in Kannada, the state language. Hampe is also said to be the old name for Tungabhadra river as it is situated on its banks. Hampi has also been called as Vijayanagara or Virupakshapura. Vijayanagara became most powerful during the reigns of Krishnadevaraya and Achyutadevaraya. This was also the period of greatest architectural activity, as both these rulers commissioned several buildings in the royal capital and in other parts of their vast empire. Lord Virupaksha, was the patron deity of the Vijayanagara rulers.

Pattadakal (also called as Pattadakallu in Kannada language) is located at a distance of 22 km from Badami, the capital of the Chalukya dynasty. Pattadakal is located on the banks of the river Malaprabha.Pattadakal is well-known for the group of the 8th century monuments. The monuments at Pattadakal are listed in the UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites. The distinctiveness of monuments at Pattadakal gains from the presence of both the Dravidian and the Nagara (Indo-Aryan) styles of temple architecture. There are ten temples including a Jain sanctuary surrounded by many small shrines and plinths. Four temples are constructed in the Dravidian style, four in the Nagara style of Northern India and the Papanatha temple in mixed style.

Srirangapatna

Srirangapatna (also called as Srirangapattana in Kannada language) is located at a distance of 15 km from Mysore. Srirangapatna is located in Mandya district and is of great religious, cultural and historic significance. The entire Srirangapatna is enclosed by the river Kaveri to form an island. This island in the river Kaveri, is referred to as Goutama Kshetra. The town takes its name from the famous Sri Ranganathaswamy temple, one of the main attractions of the town.
Srirangapatna was historic capital of the Warrior-Kings Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan who fought against British rule. Several monuments relating to his rule are spread across the island.
