ನಾಲ್ಕುನಾಡು ಅರಮನೆ

ಪಶ್ಚಿಮಘಟ್ಟಳ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಲ್ಲುವ ಕೊಡಗು ಪ್ರವಾಸತಾಣಗಳಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧಿ ಪಡೆದಿದೆ. ಹಸಿರು ಸಿರಿಯಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿರುವ ಈ ಊರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ತಾಣಗಳು ಹಲವಾರಿವೆ. ಅವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಾಲ್ಕುನಾಡು ಅರಮನೆಯು ಒಂದು. ಕೊಡಗಿನ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಎತ್ತರದ ಗಿರಧಾಮ ತಡಿಯಾಂಡಮೋಳ್ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಬುಡದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಯವಕಪಾಡಿ ಹಳ್ಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿದೆ.
ಈ ಅರಮನೆಯನ್ನು 1792 ರಿಂದ 1794 ರ ನಡುವೆ ಕಟ್ಟಲಾಯಿತು. ಕೊಡಗನ್ನು ಆಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಮೊದಲನೇ ಲಿಂಗರಾಜನು 1780ರಲ್ಲಿ ಮರಣ ಹೊಂದಿದನು. ಆ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೈಸೂರಿನ ಹೈದರಾಲಿಯು ಕೊಡಗನ್ನು ಸ್ವಾಧೀನ ಪಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡನು. ಇದರಿಂದ ಬೇಸರ ಗೊಂಡ ಕೊಡವರು ಹೈದರಾಲಿಯನ್ನು ಸೋಲಿಸಿ ಓಡಿಸಿದರು. ಬಳಿಕ ಹೈದರಾಲಿಯ ಮಗ ಟಿಪ್ಪು, ಲಿಂಗರಾಜ ಅರಸನ ಮಗ ವಿರಾಜನನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ವಶಕ್ಕೆ ಪಡೆದುಕೊಂಡು, ಕೊಡಗನ್ನು ಪುನಃ ತನ್ನ ವಶಕ್ಕೆ ಪಡೆದುಕೊಂಡನು. ವಿರಾಜನ ಅಂತಿಮಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಶ್ರಯ ಪಡೆದ ಅರಮನೆ ಇದಾಗಿತ್ತು ಎಂದು ಇತಿಹಾಸ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.ಶತ್ರುಗಳಿಂದ ತಲೆಮರೆಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಹಾಗೂ ಕೆಲವು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಕಾರಣಗಳಿಗೆ ರಕ್ಷಣೆ ಪಡೆಯುವ ಉದ್ದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣಗೊಂಡ ಈ ಅರಮನೆ ಎರಡು ಅಂತಸ್ತಿನ ಹೆಂಚು ಹೊದಿಕೆಯ ಮನೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಗೋಡೆಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಮಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ವಿವಿಧ ಬಣ್ಣಗಳ ಚಿತ್ರವಿರುವುದನ್ನು ಕಾಣಬಹುದು. ಅರಮನೆಯ ಕಂಬಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಅರ್ಧ ಗುಮ್ಮಟದಂತಹ ಕೆತ್ತನೆಗಳಿವೆ. ಉತ್ತಮ ವಾಸ್ತು ಶಿಲ್ಪವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ಈ ಅರಮನೆ ಪ್ರವಾಸಿಗರಿಗೊಂದು ಆಕರ್ಷಕ ಕೇಂದ್ರವಾಗಿದೆ.
ಅರಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಮುಖ್ಯ ಸಭಾಂಗಣ, ರಾಜ ರಾಣಿಯರಿಗಾಗಿ ಮೊದಲನೆ ಮಹಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೋಣೆಗಳು ಇವೆ. ಇವೆಲ್ಲವೂ ಬಿತ್ತಿ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿವೆ. ನೆಲಮಹಡಿಯು ಅರಮನೆಯ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಮೀಸಲಿಡಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಅಡುಗೆ ಮನೆ ಹಾಗೂ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಕತ್ತಲ ಕೋಣೆಗಳಿವೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿಂದಲೇ ಮೇಲೆ ಹೋಗಲು ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲುಗಳಿವೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಎರಡು ಕೋಣೆಗಳು ಗುಪ್ತಚರರಿಗೆ ಆಶ್ರಯ ನೀಡಲು ಬಳಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಇದು ಕುಟುಂಬಕ್ಕೆ ಸೀಮಿತವಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಈ ಅರಮನೆಯ ಸುತ್ತ ದಟ್ಟವಾದ ಕಾಡುಗಳಿದ್ದುದ್ದರಿಂದ ಬೇಟೆಯಾಡಲು ಅನುಕೂಲವಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಈ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲೇ ಅರಮನೆಯನ್ನು ಬೇಟೆಯ ವಸತಿಗೃಹವಾಗಿಯೂ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು
ಅರಮನೆಯ ಎದುರು ಒಂದು ಮಂಟಪ ಇರುವುದನ್ನು ನೋಡಬಹುದು. ಇದನ್ನು ರಾಜರ ವಿವಾಹ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಸ್ಥಳವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ವಿವಿಧ ದೇವರುಗಳ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಕೆತ್ತನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕೆತ್ತಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಸುತ್ತಲು ಹಚ್ಚ ಹಸುರಿನ ಸಿರಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಗಿರಿಧಾಮ ಇರುವುದರಿಂದ ಚಾರಣ ಮಾಡಲು ಹಾಗೂ ಸುಂದರ ದೃಶ್ಯಗಳ ಸೆರೆ ಹಿಡಿಯಲು ಇದೊಂದು ಸೂಕ್ತ ತಾಣ.

Nalkand Palace or Naalnaad Aremane is a palace located in the Kodagu district of Karnataka. It is located in a village called Yavakapadi at the foot of Thadiandamol Peak, which is the highest peak in Coorg. The palace was built between 1792 and 1794 AD, to commemorate the victory of Dodda Vira Rajendra over Tipu Sultan. The palace was also the last refuge of the last of the Haleri kings, Chikka Vira Rajendra before he was deposed by the British. The palace has elaborate wood carvings, a low-tiled roof, a crescent dome, and a pillared facade. The palace is an architectural marvel. The courtyard of the palace has sculptures of four bulls. The palace has a beautiful collection of ancient paintings
The palace appears to be a very simple two-story structure which has a very close resemblance to the nearby houses in the area. Once you step into the palace, you will discover the delicate detailing in the interiors of the palace.A unique feature which is found in this palace is the figures of snakes depicted on the pillars of the palace. The snakes appear in a twisted geometric pattern which is known as Nagamandala and it happens to be a very common feature found not only here, but also all across the country. These patterns can be found in Hindu, Jain and Buddhist temples which are believed to be a sort of protection against the evil forces and negativity

In front of the palace is a mandap which was constructed especially for the king’s marriage, which is covered with carvings and sculptures of various gods and couples. While the mandap still stands, most of the carvings have given in to time and weather and remain as ruins of the once beautiful structure.
